Shasta County proudly announces the instalment of a Veterans Memorial Display at the Shasta County Administration Building, located at 1450 Court Street, Redding, CA. The display, curated by the Shasta County Veterans Services Office (VSO), pays tribute to Shasta County residents who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
In a remarkable effort, the Shasta County VSO meticulously combed through the records of the National Archives to identify every Shasta County resident who perished in conflicts since World War I. The result is a profound homage manifested through replica dog tags, each representing a fallen hero. This solemn display, adorning the display case on the 2nd floor, will remain throughout the month of May for the public to view during regular operation hours, Monday through Friday, 8am – 5pm.
One side of the display showcases the array of dog tags, each bearing the name and legacy of a Shasta County resident who gave their life in service. On the other side stands the battlefield cross, a symbolic memorial featured in ceremonies honoring fallen soldiers. Comprising a soldier's boots, rifle, dog tags, and helmet atop a wooden cross, the battlefield cross stands as a testament to the sacrifices made in defense of freedom.
"This display stands as a testament to the unwavering courage and selflessness of our Shasta County residents who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms," said Wesley Tucker, the Shasta County Veteran Services Officer. "May it serve as a reminder of their enduring legacy and the debt of gratitude we owe them."
As part of the commemoration, the Shasta County VSO invites all veterans, families, and friends to join in honoring military personnel lost in service to our country at the 31st Annual Memorial Service. The service will take place on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Grove, on the lawn of the Redding Civic Auditorium.
