At its April 8, 2025, meeting, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors approved three letters regarding important state and federal legislation. These letters express the Board’s official positions on proposed bills that could significantly impact Shasta County residents and services. Copies of the approved letters are available at the bottom of this article.

The Board approved:

✔ A Letter of Support for Assembly Bill 25 – Voter ID and Election Integrity Act of 2025
AB 25 would require voters to present valid, government-issued identification at polling places and provide documentation of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote. The Board supports this legislation as a means of strengthening public confidence in the electoral process and ensuring the integrity of voter rolls.

❌ A Letter of Opposition to Assembly Bill 690 – Criminal Procedure: Indigent Defense Compensation
AB 690 proposes a number of new mandates on counties that contract for indigent defense services, including eliminating flat-fee and per-case payment structures in favor of hourly compensation. It would also require detailed reporting and contract reviews. The Board opposes this bill, citing concerns over increased administrative burden and potential cost impacts on local governments.

✔ A Letter of Support for House Bill 1383 – Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act of 2025
HR 1383 would reauthorize funding for the Secure Rural Schools (SRS) program, which provides essential financial support for counties with large tracts of federally owned land. These funds help support rural education, maintain county roads, and bolster wildfire mitigation efforts. The Board strongly supports the continuation of this program to ensure critical services remain available in Shasta County.
