In a unanimous decision, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, to approve a $100,000 contribution towards securing an eastbound flight from Redding Regional Airport, potentially operated by United Airlines. This move is part of a broader initiative to meet United's requirement of a $2 million revenue guarantee to establish the new route.
The City of Redding has already made significant strides in this effort, securing a $750,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and allocating an additional $100,000 in city funds. The City is now seeking the remaining $1 million from community stakeholders to complete the funding.
Historically, Shasta County has supported similar initiatives, contributing $50,000 for United's southbound flight to Los Angeles, alongside contributions from the cities of Shasta Lake and Anderson.
The recent commitment from Shasta County marks a crucial step towards enhancing regional connectivity and economic growth. Moving forward, county staff will draft a resolution granting the County Executive Officer the authority to finalize documents related to this initiative. This resolution will be presented at an upcoming Board meeting for final approval.
