Some much-needed enhancements are coming to our beloved Burney Falls. Starting April 2024, the falls will be temporarily closed for the spring and summer seasons to embark on some essential trail reconstruction efforts.
California State Parks is leading the charge on this project to preserve and improve our beautiful McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The iconic 129-foot waterfall, nestled in eastern Shasta County, has enchanted visitors for generations, and while it is sad to see it closed for a season, we are excited for improvements and its ensured splendor for years to come.
The decision to close temporarily stems from the need to address erosion and trail deterioration caused by heavy foot traffic. With approximately 250,000 annual visitors, and a surge to over 350,000 during the peak of the pandemic, it's clear our trails need some TLC. But fear not! These improvements are all about enhancing your experience while keeping our natural wonders safe and accessible.
What can you expect? A repaved Burney Falls Loop Trail, construction of a retaining wall, and installation of an ADA-compliant guardrail to boost safety and accessibility. Plus, Caltrans is stepping in to improve Highway 89, leading to the park's entrance. With stricter enforcement against unauthorized parking, aiming to prevent congestion and protect our pristine surroundings.
So mark your calendars and stay tuned for updates! We can't wait to return to an even more breathtaking Burney Falls experience soon.
