Shasta County Public Works is proud to announce the completion of the "2024 Overlay Project," a $3,571,000 road resurfacing initiative fully funded by gas tax revenues. The project, finalized on November 18, 2024, rehabilitated nearly 12 miles of county roads, including Deschutes Road, Dry Creek Road, Fern Road, Old 44 Drive, and two sections of Oak Run Road.
Key improvements included the replacement of 340,000 square feet of distressed pavement through "dig-outs," as well as chip sealing and fog sealing treatments. These enhancements restore road surfaces, prevent water intrusion (a primary cause of road failure), and extend the lifespan of critical transportation infrastructure.
While chip seal applications may initially draw mixed feedback for their appearance, they represent a cost-effective solution—covering twice the area compared to conventional asphalt overlays—without compromising functionality. Over time, the appearance of these roads will improve, offering a smoother driving experience.
Shasta County Public Works designed and managed the project, with J.F. Shea Construction, Inc. serving as the prime contractor. The department thanks the community for its patience during construction and remains committed to preserving and improving our transportation network.
The County extends its gratitude to the Public Works team for their dedication and oversight throughout this complex project. Their expertise and commitment ensure the success of essential infrastructure initiatives that benefit residents across Shasta County.
