Shasta County is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. James Mu, M.D. as the new Public Health Officer, effective October 23, 2023. Dr. Mu's qualifications and commitment to the community make him a valuable addition to the public health team.
Dr. James Mu, a dedicated physician with over three decades of experience, has served the residents of Shasta County through his private practice for 30 years. He received his undergraduate education at the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned his professional degree in medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Mu further honed his skills through Family Medicine Residency training at the Mercy Medical Center.
As the Shasta County Health Officer, Dr. Mu will be responsible for a range of critical tasks, including signing birth and death certificates, monitoring and addressing factors affecting public health, and preventing the spread of contagious diseases. He will also have the authority to issue quarantine orders when necessary and ensure the enforcement of public health orders and regulations in accordance with state and federal law.
The Board of Supervisors conducted an extensive recruitment process to fill the vacant Health Officer position. After successful negotiations, an at-will employment agreement was approved to appoint Dr. Mu as the Shasta County Health Officer. His compensation has been set at the C-Step salary range of $106.86 per hour or $18,522 per month, in addition to other benefits.
