Shasta County Board of Supervisors Chairman Kevin Crye and County Executive Officer David Rickert recently attended the 2025 National Association of Counties (NACo) Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., joining nearly 2,000 elected and appointed county officials from across the nation. The conference, held from March 1 to 4, provides a critical opportunity for counties to engage with federal policymakers, advocate for local issues, and strengthen intergovernmental partnerships to benefit Shasta County and Northern California.
Throughout the conference, Chairman Crye and CEO Rickert participated in discussions on agriculture and rural affairs, public lands policy, federal immigration policy, tribal policy, and other pressing topics affecting counties nationwide.
On March 4, Chairman Crye and CEO Rickert met with key federal policymakers, ensuring that Shasta County’s priorities were heard. Their meetings included:
Congressman Doug LaMalfa’s Office – Advocated for improved fire prevention, fire insurance relief and tax credits, enhanced federal land management, election reform policies, including voter identification and same-day voting, and rural healthcare expansion, including establishment of a rural medical school.
Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee – Requested Senate hearings on California’s wildfire-related insurance crisis and promoted federal policies for enhanced fire mitigation.
United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) – Discussed expanding rural healthcare opportunities, particularly the establishment of a rural medical school in Northern California.
“Attending NACo’s Legislative Conference is a crucial part of making sure our region’s concerns are not overlooked,” said CEO Rickert. “We were able to directly address critical issues like wildfire prevention, the insurance crisis, and rural healthcare with key policymakers. These discussions are essential in securing future support for Shasta County and ensuring that the voices of our residents are heard by decision-makers in Washington, D.C.”
Shasta County remains committed to working with federal partners to protect and improve the well-being of its residents. The Board of Supervisors will continue to engage in advocacy efforts that support the county’s long-term growth and resilience
