At last week's Board of Supervisors meeting, Sheriff Michael L. Johnson delivered a heartfelt presentation recognizing the extraordinary volunteers who support the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and serve the community every day. These dedicated individuals donate their time, expertise, and compassion across a wide range of programs that help keep Shasta County safe.
Law Enforcement Chaplaincy
Volunteers with the Shasta County Law Enforcement Chaplaincy—a nonprofit organization—dedicate thousands of hours each year ministering to law enforcement personnel, their families, and the community. Their efforts provide critical emotional support during times of crisis.
Citizen Volunteer Patrols
Currently, 64 Citizen Volunteer Patrol (CVP) members serve the communities of Burney, the City of Shasta Lake, Cottonwood, Fall River Mills, Happy Valley, and Shingletown. In 2024, these volunteers logged over 6,330 hours conducting patrols, performing business and house checks, reporting suspicious activities, and providing clerical support at Sheriff’s stations. They also participated in numerous community events, including the Salmon Festival, Redding Marathon, Big Bike Weekend, National Night Out, Trunk or Treat, and various parades.
Explorer Program
The Sheriff's Office Explorer Program engages young volunteers aged 14 to 21 in public service. In 2024, five active Explorers balanced school and other commitments while assisting at community events, participating in ride-alongs with deputies, and attending regular meetings to build valuable skills and experience.
Reserve Program
Four sworn Reserve Deputies volunteered their professional law enforcement services throughout the year, assisting with patrol operations, public events, major incidents, and community outreach. These Reserve Deputies also completed annual training requirements to maintain operational readiness.
Asphalt Cowboys
The Asphalt Cowboys, an independent organization, continued their long-standing tradition of supporting the Sheriff’s Office by providing meals during special events and emergency incidents, demonstrating their steadfast commitment to the community.
Search and Rescue
Search and Rescue volunteers play a vital role in public safety. In 2024, Shasta County’s Search and Rescue teams assisted with multiple local and mutual aid searches. Specialized teams include the Communication Posse, Dirt Riders, Dive Team, Flying Posse, Ground Team, Jeep Posse, K-9 Team, Mountain Bike Team, Mountain Rescue Team, Mounted Posse, and Snowmobile Team. These dedicated volunteers train extensively and respond to a variety of emergencies, both within and beyond Shasta County.
Sheriff Johnson expressed his deep appreciation for all volunteers, emphasizing that their generosity, professionalism, and dedication are critical to the Sheriff's Office’s ability to serve and protect the residents of Shasta County.
