The Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program is turning 50 years old!
“WIC is thrilled to celebrate its 50th anniversary, marking decades of dedication to providing essential nutrition assistance, health information and breastfeeding support to the families we serve,” said Kristi Richey, of Shasta County WIC.
WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that plays a crucial role in addressing the nutritional needs of participating families not only through providing nutritional foods to families, but also by educating families about nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Throughout its history, WIC has received strong bipartisan support.
Following a successful pilot program, in 1974, the first WIC clinic opened in Pineville, Kentucky. The program’s success grew, and within one year, 45 states established a WIC program. Today, the program serves 6.7 million participants across the United States and continues to reduce healthcare costs by preventing birth complications and childhood illnesses. For every $1 spent in WIC $2.48 is saved in medical costs.
Shasta County WIC serves 4,200 participants monthly. Approximately $280,000 of WIC food benefits are redeemed in local grocery stores and farmers’ markets each month. Approximately 45% of all infants born in Shasta County are enrolled in WIC.
To celebrate this 50-year milestone, WIC is hosted an informational Open House on September 18, 2024, for the public to come and learn more about the services provided.
Shasta County extends its gratitude to community partners, dedicated staff and the countless families who have entrusted WIC with their well-being over the years. The team looks forward to another 50 years of serving with compassion, integrity and a commitment to health for all.
