April 21–25 marks Work Zone Awareness Week, a time to recognize the importance of driving safely through highway and road work zones. This annual spring campaign is especially timely as construction season begins across California.

This year, Caltrans District 2 has launched a powerful safety campaign that features local maintenance workers holding signs with heartfelt messages like “I have a family waiting for me” and “One careless move can cost a life.” The goal is to humanize those working in dangerous conditions and remind drivers that work zones are not just traffic delays—they’re workplaces where lives are at stake. Locally, Shasta County Public Works crews are also on the front lines, maintaining and improving our county’s roads and infrastructure year-round. Whether patching potholes, upgrading bridges, or managing large-scale construction projects, their commitment to public safety and service deserves recognition.

As we observe Work Zone Awareness Week, let’s all do our part: slow down, stay alert, and respect the people behind the cones. Their safety depends on our shared responsibility.
