Joseph Hendrix, Chief Investigator

The District Attorney is authorized by the California Constitution to both investigate and prosecute civil and criminal crimes.

The District Attorney’s Office houses its own 28-member law enforcement agency. This staff includes 14 full time District Attorney Investigators, 3 part time Investigators, 7 Investigative Technicians, 2 Investigative Services Analysts, and 2 process servers.

District Attorney Investigators are classified under California Penal Code section 830.1 to the same extent as municipal police officers, deputy sheriffs and deputy marshals. Shasta County District Attorney Investigators are charged with day-to-day police protection and maintenance of order throughout the County of Shasta and possess arresting authority within the State of California.

Investigators employed by the Shasta County District Attorney conduct independent investigations and provide trial support for the prosecutorial functions of the Office of the District Attorney. Investigators also assist other federal, state, and local agencies with investigations. In addition to their investigative functions, District Attorney Investigators work as first responders by making on view criminal arrests, assisting local agencies with handling incidences of civil unrest, working patrol during mutual aid requests, participating in multi-jurisdictional law enforcement task forces, and responding to and investigating critical incidents including officer involved shooting investigations.

Chief District Attorney Investigator Joseph Hendrix is charged with managing the Bureau of Investigation’s staff of law enforcement experts. The Bureau of Investigation serves a vital role in the criminal justice process and significantly contributes to the success our office has consistently achieved in the prosecution of criminal cases. Chief Investigator Joseph Hendrix reports directly to District Attorney Stephanie A. Bridgett who has overall responsibility for bureau operations and resource allocation.

Automobile Insurance Fraud

The Auto Insurance Fraud Unit handles automobile insurance fraud and organized automobile fraud cases. This unit is dedicated to the investigation and prosecution of these types of fraud crimes, which is funded through grants from the State of California Department of Insurance (CDI)

Bad Check Enforcement Program Details

The Shasta County District Attorney has instituted the Bad Check Enforcement Program to track down bad check writers, to obtain full restitution for the victims, and to deter future offenses. The Bad Check Enforcement Program is authorized by California Penal Code Section 1001.60.

It is FREE to victims in Shasta County.

Through the program, bad check writers are offered a diversion program and avoid prosecution but they must agree to the following requirements:

Child Abduction Unit

The Shasta County District Attorney’s Child Abduction Unit consists of a full‑time, sworn peace officer and a non‑sworn technician. The Child Abduction Unit are not first responders to child custody offenses or child visitation issues. If you believe a child abduction occurred, immediately contact the law enforcement agency where the abduction occurred and report the abduction.

Consumer Protection

The Consumer Protection Unit handles complaints from Shasta County citizens who allege that a business violated consumer protection laws. Our investigator works with an assigned prosecutor to seek civil or criminal penalties if a violation is found.

Criminal Investigations

The Shasta County District Attorney Bureau of Investigation’s primary role is to conduct investigations to support criminal prosecution. Investigators assist prosecuting attorneys with criminal cases such as homicide, rape, stalking, robbery, sexual assault, and many more through collection of additional evidence.

Environmental Crimes Unit

A District Attorney Investigator and Investigative Technician are assigned to the Environmental Crimes Unit. The sole purpose of this unit is the investigation of people who illegally dump on public or private land in Shasta County.

Real Estate Fraud

A Real Estate Fraud Investigator is assigned to handle real estate fraud occurring in Shasta County. The types of cases considered for investigation result from various fraudulent transactions and/or schemes including:

SB 978 Policy, Procedure and Training

These policies are living documents and are periodically updated to align with local, State and Federal laws. Updates to the manual will be posted annually. Redacted policies are exempt from disclosure under the Public Records Act as "Records of intelligence information or security procedures," 6254(f) G.C.

Welfare Fraud

The Office of the District Attorney provides investigative services for the Shasta County Department of Health and Human Services (HHSA) for allegations of welfare fraud.

Workers' Compensation Insurance Fraud

The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office Workers’ Compensation Insurance Fraud Unit has a dedicated investigator who investigates cases from many sources, including referrals from insurance carriers, other law enforcement agencies, citizens, victims and through proactive enforcement activities. The unit also includes a prosecutor who vertically prosecutes all workers’ compensation fraud cases from filing through sentencing.
