*Fire Hazard Severity Maps for Local Responsibility Areas (LRAs) have been recently updated for Northern California and released on February 10, 2025.

Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZs): These are geographic areas designated by CALFIRE based on the likelihood and potential intensity of wildfire hazards. The zones—classified as Moderate, High, or Very High—help guide building codes, defensible space requirements, and fire prevention efforts. Local Responsibility Areas (LRAs): These are areas where fire protection is primarily the responsibility of local government agencies, such as cities, counties, or special fire districts. CAL FIRE does not typically provide direct fire protection services in LRAs.

State Responsibility Areas (SRAs): These are lands where CAL FIRE is responsible for wildfire prevention and suppression. SRAs generally include unincorporated, rural areas with significant wildland vegetation but exclude incorporated cities and federally owned lands.

Government Code 51178: The State Fire Marshal shall identify areas in the state as moderate, high, and very high fire hazard severity zones based on consistent statewide criteria and based on the severity of fire hazard that is expected to prevail in those areas. Moderate, high, and very high fire hazard severity zones shall be based on fuel loading, slope, fire weather, and other relevant factors including areas where winds have been identified by the Office of the State Fire Marshal as a major cause of wildfire spread.
