Many summer activities involve using items that contain hazardous waste, requiring safe disposal after use. These include propane tanks for BBQs or camping, lighter fluid, pool and spa chemicals, aerosol products like bug spray, boat fuel, motor oil, and gardening supplies.
On Saturday, June 7, 2025, the Shasta County Department of Resource Management invites Shasta County residents to dispose of their household hazardous and electronic waste for FREE at Redding Christian School in Palo Cedro from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
This drive-thru collection event, funded by CalRecycle, is open to all households in Shasta County and is designed to prevent the improper disposal of hazardous materials that could interrupt summer activities and contaminate our landfills, groundwater, lakes, and streams. Residents' participation is crucial in fulfilling this purpose and ensuring a safe and clean environment for all.
ACCEPTABLE ITEMS include latex and oil-based paint and paint products, motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, solvents, cleaners, pesticides, fertilizers, batteries, pool chemicals, sharps, fluorescent light tubes and bulbs, propane and fire extinguisher cylinders, aerosol cans, and other items with warning labels such as Caution, Danger, Toxic, Flammable, and Keep Out of the Reach of Children. Electronic waste such as computers, TVs, phones, radios, printers, etc., will also be accepted along with a small quantity of nicotine vape pens/e-cigarettes.
ITEMS NOT ACCEPTABLE include trash, yard waste/brush, tires, pharmaceuticals, appliances (including microwaves, toaster ovens, etc.), explosives, ammunition, bulky items (such as furniture), radioactive materials (smoke detectors), biological waste or business waste.
For safe transport of household hazardous waste, participants should:
- Pack household hazardous waste items in a disposable box to avoid spilling during transport.
- Keep compatible chemicals together and incompatible chemicals separate (for guidance, see: https://blink.ucsd.edu/safety/research-lab/chemical/storage/compatibility.html).
- Secure lids and make sure containers are not leaking.
- Place box(es) of household hazardous waste in your vehicle’s empty trunk away from passengers.
- Remain in your vehicle at the collection site. Event staff will remove household hazardous and electronic waste from your vehicle.
- State regulations limit the transport of household hazardous waste to a maximum of five gallons or fifty pounds* per vehicle. *Excluding e-waste.
For those unable to attend these events, FREE year-round drop-off of hazardous and electronic waste is available to Shasta County residents at the City of Redding Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 2255 Abernathy Lane, Redding.
