Health Benefits

All full-time employees may elect to enroll in medical, dental, and vision coverage at the time of hire, with insurance premiums deducted from each paycheck. Future changes—such as switching plans or adding dependents—can be made during the annual Open Enrollment period in mid-September or in response to a qualifying life event, such as the birth of a child or a change in marital status.

Medical benefits are managed by CalPERS or Teamsters depending on your position’s bargaining unit.

CalPERS Blue Shield plans are offered to employees in the following bargaining units/employment units:

  • DSA-DSS-DAI
  • DSA-CO
  • PPOA
  • SAA
  • UPEC General
  • UPEC Professional
  • Unrepresented Management
  • Confidential

Teamsters Trust health coverage plans are offered to employees in the following bargaining units:

  • DCI
  • MMBU
  • SUPV
  • Trades and Crafts

The County pays most, or all, of the employee health insurance premium, and contributes a portion of the dependent health insurance premium. The County also makes contributions for a portion of a retiree's health insurance premium. For new hires enrolling in Teamsters health insurance, benefits are effective the first of the month following a full 30 days of employment.
