The District Attorney's Office, along with many other law-enforcement agencies, is experiencing significant difficulties in recruiting and hiring in the District Attorney’s Investigator I/II positions. The board of Supervisors approved a pilot program to offer signing bonuses to these classifications.

The sign-on hiring bonuses would be paid in two-installments, half at initial hiring and half upon successful completion of probation, in the following position classifications: (1) District Attorney’s Investigator I - $15,000; and (2) District Attorney’s Investigator II - $15,000.

As a condition of receiving a sign-on bonus, new hires must not have been employed by the County of Shasta in the last 3 years and are required to sign an Agreement to remain employed with the Shasta County District Attorney's Office for at least three full years from the date of hire or be responsible for a pro-rata repayment of any applicable sign-on bonus.

The sign-on bonus will only apply to qualified employees from December 4, 2022, through June 30, 2024. If the Pilot Program is effective in bringing qualified recruits to Shasta County, it may be extended through June 30, 2025. However, the County reserves the right to discontinue this Pilot Program during any fiscal year and the continuation of this Pilot Program is contingent on the County’s Board of Supervisors appropriating funds in the County’s budget.

The District Attorney’s Office and Department of Support Services will report back to the Board of Supervisors periodically throughout the pilot term with assessments on the impact to recruitments and whether the department believes there would be value in continuing the program at the end of the 18-month pilot.
