How can I get the coordinates of my property corners from the GIS map?
- This is a very common question, the most accurate answer is that you can't get accurate parcel information form the GIS maps the County hosts. There are several explanations for this.
- Parcels on the GIS maps are maintained by the Assessor Recorder and are for assessment purposes only. You can absolutely us the map for contextual and parcel information, e.g. the parcel number and link to an Assessor page that could be used when contacting the Assessor Recorder ( https://www.shastacounty.gov/assessor ).
- The Assessor mapping staff can only provide information about if the property is in a Subdivision or a result of a Parcel Map. The recorded map may have information about where the markers are and how they are labeled. This information is on the recorded maps that can be viewed on Public Computers at the Assessor Recorders office.
- A licensed surveyor would be the appropriate resource for property corners ( https://www.bpelsg.ca.gov/pubs/consumer_guide.pdf ).
Does the county maintain my road?
- The Shasta County Resource Management Department ( https://www.shastacounty.gov/resource-management ) maintains the data about roads and is the best resource for roads questions in the unincorporated area of the county.
The address on my house is wrong, how can I get it changed?
- Simiilar to roads, the Shasta County Resource Management Department ( https://www.shastacounty.gov/resource-management ) maintains the data about address points and is the addressing authority for the unincorporated area of the county.
What (planning) Zone is my property in and what can I build on it?
- In the Shasta County Map is a Zoning layer that has links to the Zone, in the unincorporated area of the County, hosted on the Municode page. These descriptions can usually answer most zoning questions.
- To get to the zoning description links, referencing the image with green highlighted areas;
- Open the Explore Shasta County map ( )
- Search or zoom to the location of interest
- Open the Layer List widget on the top blue header
- Check on the Planning group layer to make it visible, the Zoning layer should be visible by default
- Click on the map, a popup should appear with small arrows at the top right. The arrow will scroll through information from various map layers. Zone information will be the layer with 'ZONING' information.
- Some zones have multiple descriptions. The links are labeled 'More info' and will open a new browser tab to Municode.
But wait, there is no zoning area for my property?
- The zone information we have is only for the unincorporated area of the county. If your property is within the City of Redding, City of Shasta Lake or City of Anderson, then they would have zoning information for your property. Links to their GIS pages are below.
- City of Redding ( https://gispub.cityofredding.org/reddingmap/ )
- City of Shasta Lake ( https://cityofshastalake.org/1159/Interactive-Maps )
- City of Anderson ( https://www.ci.anderson.ca.us/departments/public_works1/gis.php )
The satellite imagery changes when I zoom in and out and is not up to date, what's wrong?
- The basemap imagery on the Shasta County web maps is provided by or GIS vendor, Esri. It is a composite layer of imagery from various sources, with varying resolutions, and captured at various times. When zooming into a location, the imagery may change to a higher quality more recent image. They imagery is also not real time, as some might be from a few months ago, other parts of the county may be years old.
- In the Explore Shasta County app, by using the 'Basemap' widget you can change the basemap to be one of the 'NAIP' basemaps. These are usually a lower resolution but are captured within a set time, so they can be used as snapshots in time for a location.
When was the data last updated?
- The timeliness of the data layers varies substantially. Some layers, e.g. the County Boundary, are basically never updated. Other layers, e.g. some property information, is updated every morning. Below is a generalized list of the update frequency for popular layers.
- Parcel attribute information : every morning it is updated from Assessor Recorder data
- Parcel boundaries : usually a couple of times a year, when a new countywide parcel layer is released to the GIS from the Assessor mapping group.
- Address points : for addresses in the unincorporated areas, typically Monday mornings based on edits from Resource Management the previous week. Address points within the incorporated cities are maintained by the city. We usually coordinate with the cities often and usually get an update of their addresses quarterly.
- Basemap imagery : we don't have direct control of the imagery layer, this is updated by our GIS vendor, Esri.
- Roads : roads within the unincorporated area are scheduled to by updated on Monday mornings. Similarly to address points, roads within the incorporated cities are maintained by the city. We usually coordinate with the cities often and usually get an update of their roads quarterly.
- Zones (planning) : usually every few months when Resource Management lets us know there has been an update to the Zones then they are published to the web maps.
- Public Tax Auction : when the auction is open per Board approval in November, the parcel for auction are updated each evening from data maintained by the Tax Collector. The data and web map is not maintained after the auction, until the next year.
- Supervisor District boundaries : these are updated every decade
- Streams, Rivers, Lakes : these are updated annually when we download a copy from the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD).
