In-Custody Death – December 12, 2023
On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 24-year-old Jonathan DeJesus Hurtado, of Shasta Lake, CA. The decedent is a Hispanic male who had been in custody for a parole violation and failure to appear warrants. Hurtado was being housed in Detention Level Two, Housing Unit C. The manner and cause of death have been determined by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office to be as follows: Manner – Accident, Cause - Toxic Effects of Fentanyl.
In-Custody Death - February 15, 2024
On Thursday, February 15, 2024, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 58-year-old Raymond Leon Burns, of Redding, CA. The decedent is a Native American male who was in custody on charges of 3010.10(A) PC Sex Registrant Remove/Disable GPS monitor. Burns was being held in the Medical Housing Unit of the facility. The manner and cause of death have been determined by the Shasta County Coroner's Office to be as follows: Manner - Natural, Cause - Disseminated fungal infection due to human immunodeficiency virus and other significant conditions: Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, Hepatitis C.
In-Custody Death - February 21, 2024
On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 45-year-old Jedidiah Clinton Peltier, of Redding, CA. The decedent is a Caucasian male who was serving a 3 year, 8 month jail sentence for two counts of 1203.3(A) PC Revocation of probation. Peltier was being held in Detention Level Two, Housing Unit B. The manner and cause of death have been determined by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office to be as follows: Manner - Accidental, Cause - Toxic effects of fentanyl.
In-Custody Death – September 6, 2024
On Friday, September 6, 2024, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 60-year-old Manuel Galindo Diaz, of Shasta Lake City, CA. The decedent is a Hispanic male who in custody for PC 647(f) – Public Intoxication. Diaz was being held on the Booking Detention Level in Sobering Cell Three (SBR3). The manner and cause of death have been determined by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office to be as follows: Manner – Accident, Cause - Lethal cardiac arrhythmia due to cardiomyopathy due to chronic methamphetamine abuse.
In-Custody Death - January 24, 2025
On Friday, January 24, 2025, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 27-year-old Juan Moreno, of Redding, CA. The decedent is a Hispanic Male who was in custody on charges of 594(A)(2) PC Vandalism: Damage Property, 148(A)(1) PC Obstruct/Resist/ETC Public/Peace Officer, 148.9(B) PC False Identification to a Peace Officer, 459 PC Burglary, 10851(A) CVC Vehicle Theft, 451(C) PC Arson of a Structure/Forest Land, 69(A) PC Obstruct/Resist Exec Officer, 243(E)(1) PC Battery: Spouse/Ex Spouse/Date/ETC, 459.5(A) PC Shoplifting. Moreno was awaiting Trial. Moreno was being held in Detention Level 2, Housing Unit C, Cell 4 of the facility. The manner and cause of death have been determined by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office to be as follows: Manner – Suicide, Cause - Hanging.
In-Custody Death - September 14, 2025
On Sunday, September 14, 2025, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 46-year-old Nathan Arthur Webster, of Redding, CA. The decedent is a Caucasian male who was in custody on charges of 148 (a)(1) PC Obstruct/Resist/ETC Public/Peace Officer, 11377(A) HS Possess Methamphetamine, 3056 PC Awaiting Parole Revocation Hearing, 647(f) PC Public Intoxication, 422(a) PC Threaten Crime with Intent to Terrorize, 422.6(a) PC Violate Civil Rights by Force or Threat of Force , and 69(a) PC Resisting an Executive Officer. The decedent was awaiting trial and was being held in Detention Level 2, Housing Unit “C”, Cell 14 of the facility. The manner and cause of death are awaiting final determination by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.
In-Custody Death - October 26, 2025
On Sunday, October 26, 2025, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 24-year-old Michael Kennith Jorgenson, of Redding, CA. The decedent is a Caucasian male who was in custody on charges of 273.5 (a) PC Inflict Corporal Injury on Spouse/Cohabitant/Dating Relationship, 368 (b)(1) PC Cause Injury to Elder/Dependent Adult, 243 (e)(1) Battery: Spouse/Ex Spouse/Date, Etc. The decedent was awaiting trial and was being held in Detention Level 2, Housing Unit “A”, Cell 11 of the facility. The manner and cause of death are awaiting final determination by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.
In-Custody Death - October 30, 2025
On Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the time of death, 56-year-old Jason Scott Driskell, of Redding, CA. was admitted to a local hospital due to his medical condition. The decedent is a Caucasian male who was in custody on charges of 3056 PC Violating Conditions of Parole, 11364 (a) HS Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, 11395 (b)(1) HS Possession of Controlled Substance with Prior Convictions, 11377 (a) HS Possession of Methamphetamine. On October 23, 2025, California State Parole dropped their hold on Driskell for the charge of Violation of Parole. The decedent was awaiting trial and was being held in Detention Level 2, Housing Unit “D”, Cell 18 of the facility prior to medical staff requesting he be transferred a local hospital. The manner and cause of death are awaiting final determination by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.
In-Custody Death - January 6, 2026
On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 53-year-old Tina Marie Elrite, of Redding, CA. The decedent is a Caucasian female who was in custody on charges of 647(f) PC Public Intoxication. The decedent was awaiting release and was being held on the Booking Detention Level in Sobering Cell Four (SBR4). The manner and cause of death are awaiting final determination by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.
