Shasta County Jail In-Custody Death Reporting

The information below is being provided in response to the passage of California Assembly Bill 2761, which took effect on January 1, 2023. 

In-Custody Death – December 12, 2023

On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 24-year-old Jonathan DeJesus Hurtado, of Shasta Lake, CA. The decedent is a Hispanic male who had been in custody for a parole violation and failure to appear warrants. Hurtado was being housed in Detention Level Two, Housing Unit C. It is suspected that the decedent died as a result of a fentanyl overdose; however, the manner and cause of death are awaiting final determination by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.

In-Custody Death - February 15, 2024

On Thursday, February 15, 2024, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 58-year-old Raymond Leon Burns, of Redding, CA. The decedent is a Native American male who was in custody on charges of 3010.10(A) PC Sex Registrant Remove/Disable GPS monitor. Burns was being held in the Medical Housing Unit of the facility. The manner and cause of death are awaiting final determination by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.

In Custody Death - February 21, 2024

On Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the time of death, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office held custodial responsibility for 45-year-old Jedidiah Clinton Peltier, of Redding, CA. The decedent is a Caucasian male who was serving a 3 year, 8 month jail sentence for two counts of 1203.3(A) PC Revocation of probation. Peltier was being held in Detention Level Two, Housing Unit B. The manner and cause of death are awaiting final determination by the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.
