Shasta County Adult Protective Services (APS) is committed to helping seniors (ages 60 and older) and dependent adults (ages 18-59) live in a safe environment, free from abuse and exploitation. APS investigates, intervenes and provides services to those who are unable to protect their own interests or to care for themselves. Social workers investigate allegations of abuse, neglect, exploitation and abandonment, and also help provide information and referrals for housing, food, clothing and case management.

Adult Protective Services also investigates allegations of elder abuse. Types of abuse include:

  • Assault/battery
  • Physical or chemical restraint
  • Sexual abuse
  • Improper use of medication
  • Neglect / abandonment
  • Abduction
  • Financial exploitation
  • Isolation
  • Self-neglect (physical and medical care)
  • Health and safety hazards
  • Malnutrition/dehydration

Once an abusive situation or event has been reported, APS staff investigates the claim and takes appropriate action. Working in partnership with other agencies, APS works to arrange the services necessary to resolve the current abusive situation and protect the victim from future abuse.
