We welcome new caregivers
Shasta County Public Authority welcomes new caregivers. We recruit, screen and provide orientation to caregivers before they can start work. This helps makes sure the service people receive is safe and reliable.
Enrolled and eligible caregivers are added to the Public Authority Registry. Anyone that is eligible for In-Home Supportive Services can work with Public Authority to be matched with a someone who meets their needs. Caregivers may also use the registry to find work.
What steps do I need to take to become an IHSS caregiver?
To enroll as a caregiver and be placed on the Public Authority Registry, you must:
- Make an appointment to attend orientation by calling (530) 225-5507
- Complete the 2-hour orientation
- Sign an agreement that you understand the rights and responsibilities of being a care provider
- Clear a background check within 90 days of completing orientation
- Complete and return a 426-A Recipient Designation of Provider form to Public Authority for each person you serve. This is how the IHSS recipient confirms that you are working for them. It also informs us of your start date. You will be provided with a W4 (tax withholdings) and DE4 for each 426-A form.
What is important to know about orientation?
Caregiver orientation is by appointment only. It is held every Monday and lasts approximately two hours. Arrive early to register. The doors close at start time, and no one is allowed in late.
You must bring your Social Security card and a valid photo ID. The name must match on both documents. The photo ID can be:
- An unexpired driver’s license or ID card issued by the California DMV
- Military ID
- Passport
- Federal tribal ID
- Permanent resident card
If you are unable to attend your scheduled orientation, please call (530) 225-5507. This makes it possible for us to fill the empty spot. You may reschedule at any time.
What is important to know about the background check?
The background check must be completed within 90 days of orientation. You will receive letter if all the steps are complete, and you receive passing results. If you do not pass the background check, you will be sent a letter explaining why, with steps to get a waiver or request an appeal if you choose to do so.
When can I start working?
First, it’s important to note that caregivers are employees of the person they are providing care to (the IHSS recipient).
If you are confident that you will pass the background check, you can start working for your IHSS recipient. Timecards will be made retroactive to the start date they provided.
If you start working, don’t complete the background check or results show that you may be ineligible, IHSS payroll will not issue timecards. The recipient you work for will be responsible for paying you.
