Tobacco Laws and Violations

Checking ID

You must check photo ID of everyone who appears under the age of 27 who attempts to purchase tobacco products and verify the customer is of legal age to purchase. This is an each and EVERY time requirement (even if you know the person to be of legal age). If you "carded" them yesterday, you must "card" them again today!

Decline a sale when the customer is underage, has no photo ID, the photo ID contains no date of birth or the photo ID has expired.

Checking driver's licenses may seem easy enough, but are you and your staff able to identify fake IDs?  The ID Checking Guide will help you know if a document if valid, altered or counterfeit. You can order your own ID Checking Guide here.

Signage Requirements

As a retailer, this sign is required by law to be posted, in plain sight, at any register where tobacco products are sold. If you need a new sign, please fill out the Tobacco Signage Order Form or contact our Tobacco Compliance Specialist, Debbie Burkett at 530.225.3745.

Tobacco Compliance

The public may call the Shasta County Tobacco Violation Hotline at 530.225.5052 to report a smoking, tobacco sale violation or file a secondhand smoke complaint.
