Mission

To keep tobacco products out of the hands of youth and to help tobacco users quit.

General Information

The Tobacco Prevention Program educates the community on the impacts of tobacco. They also provide education on how the community can reduce youth tobacco use and access.

  • As of January 2025, there are 216 tobacco retailers in Shasta County.
  • Over 46% of schools are within 1,000 feet of a tobacco retailer. That is less than one lap around a football field.
  • The majority of Shasta County youth reported buying vapes from a tobacco retailer, 32.6%.
  • Shasta County youth reported the highest use of tobacco ever-used in the State of California, 1 in 3.

When tobacco retailers are near homes and schools, people's health suffer.

Tobacco products are the only products sold that kill when used as intended. They are harmful and deadly to even those who do not use them.

The Tobacco Prevention Program promotes the ask, advice, refer program to lower tobacco use rates. Staff encourage behavioral health and medical providers to use the ask, advice, and refer program too.

The program hopes to see a 10% increase in cessation referrals by 2027.

The Tobacco Prevention Program can:

  • Conduct educational presentations.
  • Provide skill building trainings.
  • Provide smoke-free signage for businesses.
  • Educate tobacco retailers on federal, state, and local tobacco laws.
  • Share cessation resources.
  • And much more!
