Flu shots are recommended for people ages six months and older, especially for those at higher risk for serious complications from the flu. Those most at risk for flu complications are pregnant, age 50 and older, young children, and people with compromised immune systems.
Flu vaccines stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies. Typically, it takes about two weeks after vaccination for these antibodies to develop. They protect against infection and reduce the severity of the illness. Because it can take this long for the flu shot to work fully, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting an annual flu shot by the end of October. Flu season generally lasts from mid-November to around April 15.
If you cannot get your flu shot before the end of October, don’t give up. Getting your flu shot later is better than not getting it at all. Vaccines are available through healthcare providers and at many retail pharmacies. To make an appointment at the county’s Public Health Clinic, call (530) 225-5591 or (800) 971-1999.
