What is Xylazine?

Xylazine is a non-opioid animal sedative that is not approved for human use.
In some places, it is referred to as “tranq dope.”

The Facts

  • Xylazine is being mixed with powdered drugs like heroin, fentanyl and sometimes coke and meth.

  • It can cause drowsiness, unresponsiveness, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, and decreased breathing.

  • Xylazine has been linked to many fatal and nonfatal overdoses. There is risk for overdose when used alone and when mixed with other drugs (mainly fentanyl).

  • When xylazine is added to fentanyl/heroin the risk for overdose is higher.

  • Xylazine causes really bad skin ulcers when injected, even beyond the site of injection, like anywhere with a bite or cut. Missed shots can make skin ulcers worse.

Overdose Tips

  • If someone is unresponsive, it’s very important to see if they are breathing! If they are taking 10 breaths each minute, keep an eye on them for the next hour. You don’t need to use

  • Narcan unless their breathing gets slower.

  • Narcan doesn’t work on xylazine, BUT it will help if the opioid/fentanyl is making it hard for them to breathe.

  • If their breathing is slow or shallow, use Narcan the way you normally would, because they probably have opioids in their system too. They may not become responsive right away, but as long as they are taking 10 breaths per minute, just stay with them and keep checking. Call 911 and put them in the recovery position.
