Tips for Seniors:

  • See your doctor if you are just starting an exercise program.
  • Start out slowly and add additional minutes each time you walk to reach your goal.
  • Warm up, cool down, and stretch to reduce injuries and muscle soreness.
  • Choose proper footwear. Buying shoes is virtually the only necessary expense for walking, so don't cut corners on your shoe budget.
  • Pay attention to your feet. Changes and/or pain in the feet and ankles are not normal and could indicate a serious foot ailment or circulatory problem. For information on walking or general foot care visit the American Podiatric Medical Association website.
  • Walk on soft ground. With age, the natural shock absorbers (or "fat padding") in your feet deteriorate, as does bone density.
  • Drink fluids before, during, and after walking.
  • Enjoy the scenery and have fun!
