SIDS - References

Appendix A

Additional facts about SIDS:

  • Occurs in the United States at a rate of .54 per 1,000 live births (National Center for Health Statistics 2009).
  • Rates of SIDS are twice as high among African American and American Indian/Alaska Native infants when compared to rates for non-Hispanic White infants.
  • Occurs more often in males than in females.
  • Most infants have no sign of serious illness before the SIDS death. SIDS deaths are unexpected, sudden, and have no clear explanation after careful investigation. Parents are not to blame.
