Additional facts about SIDS:

Occurs in the United States at a rate of .54 per 1,000 live births (National Center for Health Statistics 2009).
Rates of SIDS are twice as high among African American and American Indian/Alaska Native infants when compared to rates for non-Hispanic White infants.
Occurs more often in males than in females.
Most infants have no sign of serious illness before the SIDS death. SIDS deaths are unexpected, sudden, and have no clear explanation after careful investigation. Parents are not to blame.
