Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP)

Comprehensive Prenatal Services Program

The Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) Program of the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency administers the Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program in Shasta County.

What is the Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP)?

CPSP is a comprehensive program which provides a wide range of culturally competent services to pregnant women, from conception through 60 days postpartum.  In addition to standard obstetric services, women receive enhanced services in the areas of nutrition, psychosocial and health education. This approach has shown to reduce both low birth weight rates and health care costs in women and infants.

Goals of the program:

  • To improve the outcome of every pregnancy
  • To decrease the incidence of low birth weight in infants
  • To lower heath care costs by preventing catastrophic illness in infants and children
  • To give every baby a healthy start in life

Who can be a CPSP provider?

Any of the following can be a CPSP provider, as long as they are an active Medi-Cal provider with an active National Provider Identifier (NPI) number and in good standing with their licensure board: A physician, certified nurse midwife, certified family or pediatric nurse practitioner, hospital, community clinic or medical group.

What are CPSP services?

CPSP services include:

  • Client orientation to comprehensive prenatal services
  • Initial assessments, trimester reassessments, postpartum assessment, interventions, and follow-up services in obstetrics, nutrition, health education and psychosocial services
  • Individual case coordination
  • Prenatal vitamin/mineral supplements
  • WIC, genetic screening, dental care, family planning, and pediatric care
